Big Ups To Bricks By The Bay

I’m very happy to say that my first ever LEGO convention experience was a wonderful one. I had a feeling I’d have a great time at this weekend’s Bricks by the Bay, but I’m glad that my suspicions were confirmed. I’ll be doing a proper wrap-up over the next week or so, but here’s a quick list of highlights:

  • Met a bunch of great folks, the short list including the award-winning Bionicle maven, Norbert, who pretty much showed me the convention ropes, and the awesome vendors I got to share a corner of the hall with, particularly John & Esther of Brick Brigade and Brett & John of Brick Command
  • Saw some amazing MOCs live and in person by the likes of RoninLUG, Ochre Jelly, V&A Steamworks, the Carlsons, Linda Smith, Brian Heins, MacLane, Alyse, Arthur Hill, Bill Ward, and many more.
  • Won both “small” (blue baseplate) and “large” (10199 Winter Toy Shop set) door prizes my first night there. What are the odds?
  • Sold a decent amount of Ka-GO t-shirts and button sets.. (Thanks to everyone who supported!)

All in all, a great time. Again, I’ll do some post-convention posts this week and next to give folks a much better idea of all that went down, but I just wanted to give you all a taste of what went down. Thanks to all involved in the planning and program. It was an extremely impressive production. Without the hard work of all volunteers, us regular ol’ attendees wouldn’t have had such a great time.

Finally, some news from BBtB! I was beginning to wonder if the convention even happened this weekend. I can’t wait to hear about all the festivities.

Thanks for the high praise. I don’t recall ever being referred to as a “maven” before now. The word is of Yiddish origin (Hebrew) so it’s all good. You had an iconic t-shirt design that caught the attention of many Bricks by the Bay convention goers. It was a pleasure meeting you and your significant other. I hope to hear from you later regarding that interview we talked about. I wish you much success in your endeavors.

I’ve been pretty busy this summer 2011 with LEGO events. I helped out at the LEGO Store build event at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA in early June. I participated in the STAR WARS Days event at LEGOLAND California in Carlsbad in mid-June. I have plans to attend BrickFair in Washington D.C. in early August and BrickCon in Seattle, Washington in late September / early October.

Whenever I have worn the pirate shirt, I have heard great comments. I tell them to go visit the website.

I upgraded my Flickr account to PRO level just prior to this writing and locked onto a permanent account name (norbyzero). I am the process of transferring images to the site in the coming weeks hopefully before Comic-Con.

My mother passed away unexpectedly near the end of May. She was supportive of my interest in creating with LEGO elements. She would show off the issue of BrickJournal 13 (February 2011) in which I have my article (pages 8 – 11). I have taken on a “life is too short attitude”, so I have been more goal and action oriented about my interests. In her memory, I been creating MOCs. I am looking forward to communicating with you soon, S-man.
